Canna Indica, also known as Indian shot or Arrowroot, is a tropical and subtropical perennial plant that forms dense clumps and produces showy flame-red flowers on erect stems. The plant is a member of the Cannaceae family and may grow up to 8 feet tall and 3 feet wide.
The large, paddle-shaped leaves of the Canna Indica plant can range in color from green to violet-green. Hummingbirds, butterflies, bees, moths, and bats are attracted to the plant's vibrant flowers.
Canna Indica prefers well-drained, moist soils with a preferably acidic pH. The plant can thrive in various soil types, including sand, clay, loam, and chalk. After the last frost in spring, the rhizomes should be planted about 3 feet apart and 4-6 inches deep.
In areas where Canna Indica is not winter hardy, typically USDA Zones 8 through 11, the rhizomes should be lifted from the ground for winter storage. The rhizomes should be stored in a cool, dry area, such as in peat or vermiculite, and misted with water to prevent shriveling.
After the first frost in the fall, the plants should be cut down to the ground. The rhizomes need to be spaced properly, and the spent flowers should be removed to encourage continuous flowering from August to October.
Canna Indica's preferred growing conditions include sunlight and moist, well-drained soils. However, the plant should not be planted in poorly drained soils, as the rhizomes will rot. With proper care and attention, this tropical and subtropical perennial can thrive and provide a stunning display of vibrant flowers.
